Nassau, Bahamas – Lyford Cay Foundation, Inc. recently granted $12,500 to Bahamas All-Stars Youth Development Organisation, enabling the organisation to purchase new musical instruments. The youth band plans to use these instruments to enrich their work with young people, especially as they display their talents at the 2014 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade – held in November in New York City and widely watched throughout the world.
This will not be the organisation’s first foray into the international spotlight. Since its performance at Bethune-Cookman University in the United States, the marching band has been invited to perform at numerous events and colleges abroad because of its talented young musicians.
Locally, the organisation is well known for its emphasis on both music and academics; offering positive mentoring, professional musical training and college preparation. Directors regularly check report cards, and volunteers offer free SAT preparation classes. Since its founding in August 2010 by Co-directors Yonell Justilien and Ronald Campbell through the Ministry of Youth Sports and Culture, 49 of the group’s former students have received music scholarships to study abroad and an additional 19 are enrolled at The College of The Bahamas.
Now, with a helping hand from the Lyford Cay Foundation, the organisation looks forward to offering more of Nassau’s talented students the chance to use their musical skills to get ahead.
“We think it’s admirable and refreshing to see someone encouraging young people to pursue and develop their talents,” said Maureen French, Managing Director of the Lyford Cay Foundation. “What is even more special about this group is that students are taught that they have the ability to achieve things they didn’t think were possible. We make it our work to help students realise their educational dreams and we are delighted to support others who are doing the same.”
The recent grant has provided the group with the means to acquire additional instruments and expand its student membership.
“We just want to see these kids grow in a positive way,” said Justilien, Director of Bands. “Often, our society just looks at music as a hobby, but we know that music is a way to open doors for children. We are so thankful that the Foundation believes in us and supports us so that we can continue giving our students the training they need to build their futures.”
